Local SEO Audit Checklist for Small Businesses

A useful local SEO audit looks beyond whether a site has a green score. It checks whether nearby people can understand your services, confirm that you operate in their area, and take the next step without confusion. Start with the way a real customer searches, not a list of isolated keywords.

Confirm Your Business Identity

Check that the displayed business name, public address where appropriate, phone number, opening hours and service areas agree across the website and its major business profiles. A service-area business should follow the profile platform’s eligibility rules rather than publishing an address it does not serve customers from. Remove outdated information before creating additional directory listings.

Review Your Most Important Pages

Open your homepage, top service pages and contact page on a phone. Each page should explain what the service includes, where it is provided, who it helps, and how to enquire. Review heading structure, visible calls to action, descriptive internal links, accessibility and image alternatives. Thin location pages that merely swap city names usually fail to help users.

Check Technical Eligibility

Verify indexing in Google Search Console, review canonical links and robots directives, confirm that important pages return successful status codes, and test representative mobile pages in PageSpeed Insights. Lighthouse is a useful diagnostic but it is not a substitute for a full crawl, a Search Console review or local pack monitoring.

Build a Prioritized Action List

Record the issue, affected URL or business profile, why it matters, the person responsible and how you will verify the fix. Prioritize customer-facing barriers and confirmed indexing problems before cosmetic changes. Recheck improvements after implementation and follow real business enquiries over time.
