How to Read PageSpeed Insights Without Misreading SEO Scores
Google PageSpeed Insights runs Lighthouse lab tests and may also display real-user field data where sufficient information exists. A performance number is useful but not a universal ranking score. Test the correct mobile and desktop page and focus on what the metrics say about the visitor experience.
Performance and SEO Mean Different Things
The performance category examines loading and interactivity conditions under a defined test setup. The SEO category checks selected technical basics, not your keyword targeting, links, local pack positions or content quality. A high SEO audit score does not prove that a page is indexed or capable of ranking for a query.
Understand the Core Metrics
Largest Contentful Paint indicates when the largest visible content item appears. Interaction to Next Paint measures responsiveness using field data when available, while Total Blocking Time is a lab proxy in Lighthouse. Cumulative Layout Shift reflects unexpected movement. Review your page templates rather than assuming one test run describes the entire site.
Turn Opportunities Into Safe Fixes
Compress and size hero images correctly, reserve space for images and embeds, review fonts and scripts, and reduce unnecessary blocking resources. Avoid deleting CSS or JavaScript solely to raise a synthetic score without validating functionality. Run regression tests for navigation, forms, checkout and layout after performance changes.
Recheck Real Use and Search Data
Run multiple comparable tests and look for trends, not a single best score. When possible, compare Search Console Core Web Vitals field data with real visitor complaints and conversions. A free Lighthouse scan can guide your investigation, but technical changes still need manual verification.
